Do you want to improve how you market your business online?

Last Modified: January 4, 2013 by Alexandra Skey Leave a Comment

Want to improve how you market your business online? Since it’s 2013, I’ll let you in on a little secret.

If it’s not working, change it.

While perseverance is admirable and often rewarded, blind persistence can lead you down a rabbit hole you’ll never get out.

You only have 24 hours a day, less the time you choose to sleep, eat and spend with your loved ones. So choose wisely. If you’re not enjoying how you market your business online or your general experience online, instead of forcing it, adapt. Ask yourself – what don’t I like about it?

Do you want to improve how you market your business online?

Humans are social by nature

When I meet business owners who tell me they don’t like social media or they don’t want to use it, what they’re really saying is that they haven’t found a way to share the stories they love to share in person, but online.

Maybe you’re more visual, and Pinterest would be perfect, but that expensive consultant said that if you didn’t tweet 7 times a day you wouldn’t make it. Maybe you love to write blogs, but a friend suggested you spend your time finding and sharing “good content” to increase the reach of your Facebook page. And really, who reads blogs anyways. Maybe…

Spokal’s Drag & Drop Editor makes blogging fun!

Last Modified: December 22, 2012 by Alexandra Skey 2 Comments

Would you blog if it were more fun?

We thought so too!

The blogging experience for small business owners is broken. It’s not fun or easy to share their story online. Which is sad, because almost every small business owner we meet has a remarkable story to tell.

We want small businesses to love sharing their story online as much as they do in person, so we created a fun Drag & Drop editor in Spokal. It allows you to easily create stories in a short period of time. You can add big and beautiful photographs right from the editor and see what people are saying on the web about a topic and drag that into your post.

What do you think?

This is only the beginning. We’ll be adding drag and drop YouTube, the ability to modify the messages that you post to Facebook and Twitter, and more!

Let us know what you’d like to see.

It’s not about being perfect

Last Modified: December 21, 2012 by Alexandra Skey 2 Comments

It's not about being perfect

We were praised in high school for getting straight As. It was all about dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s, and following instructions to nth degree. You’d get penalties for spelling mistakes and not formatting your paper right. For not handing in a paper on time or being late to class. The school system is designed to streamline you to be as “perfect” as you can.

School Ruined Blogging

So it’s no wonder many of us are afraid of blogging. It’s not that we don’t know what to write, or that it will take us too long, we’re worried that it won’t be good enough. That it won’t be perfect. That someone will call us up and say, “

I can’t believe you wrote that. What were you thinking

?”That fear is enough to put the “do a blog post” on the back burn, eternally. And who’s to blame?

Marketing Trends In 2013 – How Will They Affect Your Small Business?

Prediction 7: Social & Content Impact SEO Even More

This is a good one to start off with because it’s about a topic most of us loath, mainly because we don’t understand it – SEO.
“Over the years, good search SEO was all about knowing the tricks of the trade. The SEO of tomorrow will be less about having the right H1 tag or the right keywords on the page and more about creating really good, original content that is socially consumed and shared.”
Awesome.

What does this mean?

Will Keywords Hurt My Business?

Last Modified: May 10, 2016 by Alexandra Skey Leave a Comment

I was having a conversation with a young female entrepreneur who curates and sells Scandinavian jewellery from the 1960s. We were talking about the value of using keywords for blogging and focusing your online marketing campaign. She asked me, “will keywords hurt my business?”While Cosima sees the value in using keywords to help customers find hopea online, but she was concerned that her brand would be hurt by the strict focus on writing about keywords. Her brand is built around design and aesthetics, and how can she show her value when she’s forced to use certain words in her blog?

Inbound Marketing Explained: It’s Like Learning The Piano

Last Modified: November 29, 2012 by Dean Brookstone Leave a Comment

Inbound Marketing Explained: It’s Like Learning The PianoYou may have heard this word a few times now, and you’re probably wondering, what is “inbound marketing” really like? I’ve heard people describe it several ways, including “It’s like doing a bunch of stuff online” or “It’s how you get customers using the Internet.” While they’re true, that’s like me saying “Planes take you to 30,000 feet” or “Running outside helps you bump into your neighbours.”

So what? They don’t give you the full picture, and can be difficult to relate to. That’s why we’ve broken it down and compared it to something more familiar: learning to play the piano.

Yes, it really is.
