Want to improve how you market your business online? Since it’s 2013, I’ll let you in on a little secret.
If it’s not working, change it.
While perseverance is admirable and often rewarded, blind persistence can lead you down a rabbit hole you’ll never get out.
You only have 24 hours a day, less the time you choose to sleep, eat and spend with your loved ones. So choose wisely. If you’re not enjoying how you market your business online or your general experience online, instead of forcing it, adapt. Ask yourself – what don’t I like about it?
Humans are social by nature
When I meet business owners who tell me they don’t like social media or they don’t want to use it, what they’re really saying is that they haven’t found a way to share the stories they love to share in person, but online.
Maybe you’re more visual, and Pinterest would be perfect, but that expensive consultant said that if you didn’t tweet 7 times a day you wouldn’t make it. Maybe you love to write blogs, but a friend suggested you spend your time finding and sharing “good content” to increase the reach of your Facebook page. And really, who reads blogs anyways. Maybe…
You get the picture. The best part about social media is that there are so many options. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, think of it as a gift, because once you find a network that works, it will really, really work.
Which network is right for me?
Feel free to check out our post on some of the more popular social media networks, and which ones might be ideal for your business. If those don’t fit, think about your lifestyle, the type of company you’re building, your industry and what you like to read about and share online. Then pick one social media network and give it a try. If that doesn’t work, rinse and repeat.
One thing to keep in mind – and this is really important – like anything worth doing, it takes time to build your business online. So while it should be enjoyable (most of the time), you won’t see results right away.
Actually, that’s great. If you can’t make a habit out of something, then change what you’re doing so you can. Sharing your story and connecting with customers online should be a rewarding experience, and a great way to grow your business. If it’s not, chances are you just haven’t found the right channel (or balance of channels) to do that.
So, like I said, if you don’t enjoy being online, or you don’t like what you’re doing AND it’s not attracting customers, switch it up.
